Mercer Capital links Permian disposal constraints to network value and reuse investment

Mercer Capital’s November 6 post-conference analysis says disposal constraints and rising produced water volumes are increasing the importance of connected pipeline systems, backup outlets, durable service commitments and remaining disposal life. It treats beneficial reuse, data-center and power demand, and mineral recovery as potential commercial outlets that still require reliable treatment, committed customers, suitable infrastructure and workable economics. The valuation multiples discussed are the author’s conference-based analysis, not PWI valuations or verified transaction terms.

NGL reports record produced water disposal of 3.45 million barrels per day

NGL Energy Partners reported record physical disposal of approximately 3.45 million barrels of produced water per day in its fiscal second quarter, up 22.9% from a year earlier. Water Solutions adjusted EBITDA increased to $178.3 million from $151.9 million. The company says its LEX II extension remains expected in service by the end of calendar 2026 and would expand the long-haul system to 81 miles with capability to move about 560,000 barrels per day from Eddy and Lea counties in New Mexico to Andrews County, Texas.

LandBridge adds 25,000 Delaware Basin acres and outlines produced water disposal upside

LandBridge says it completed about 25,000 acres of acquisitions across its Delaware Basin footprint during the third quarter. The company identifies undeveloped pore space outside over-pressured injection zones near the Stateline region as a potential long-term produced water disposal alternative and says operator discussions are active. The release also reports higher surface-use revenue partly driven by produced water handling volumes, but does not disclose permitted disposal capacity, customer commitments or an in-service date for the new pore-space opportunity.

Study screens which fracturing additives matter most for produced water monitoring

A peer-reviewed npj Clean Water study combines 2020–2025 FracFocus disclosures, chemical-property information and published produced water evidence across 33,177 hydraulic-fracturing events. Its screening framework ranks biocides, solvents and surfactants as the leading composite-relevance categories in the Permian, and acids, biocides and solvents in the San Juan. The authors find that mature produced water salinity, major ions, metals, radionuclides and much of the ammonia burden are predominantly controlled by formation and process conditions, while additive-related influences are more relevant during the flowback-to-produced water transition and for mobile organics, toxicity-related constituents, fouling, scaling and treatment effects. The framework is intended for screening and prioritization, not source attribution, site-specific concentration estimates or exposure prediction.

DOJ alleges an interstate stolen-crude scheme involving Vallee Oil & Gas. The release distinguishes authority to accept produced water from authority to purchase crude. Indictments are allegations; the defendants are presumed innocent.

Commentary proposes a Texas tax on produced water disposal

T. Ray Guy argues for a Texas disposal tax, with a higher rate on water originating outside the state. This is a published policy argument, not proposed legislation, enacted law or PWI endorsement.

Neuquén links water fees to industrial reuse in Vaca Muerta

The province describes a water-fee framework applied from July 1 and a policy prioritizing industrial recirculation and reuse. Its separate agricultural proposal uses raw river water drawn before industrial use; it does not propose irrigating those crops with flowback.

Goodnight advances Estacado produced water pipeline in northern Delaware Basin

Previously used local reporting is carried forward as operating context. Goodnight had begun construction of a 90-mile line planned to add 550,000 barrels/day of capacity. Planned takeaway capacity is not measured throughput or a verified in-service announcement.

North Sea study finds produced water can misstate reservoir microbiomes

A peer-reviewed study compared paired reservoir-fluid and produced water samples from four North Sea fields and found that produced water alone can underrepresent reservoir-native anaerobic microbes relevant to souring and microbiologically influenced corrosion while overrepresenting water-associated taxa. The authors recommend reservoir-fluid sampling where practicable and explicit caveats when produced water is used as a proxy. Limitations include one sampling time point, unsequenced external water sources and insufficient reservoir-fluid DNA from one field for metagenomics.

DTU research examines why oil droplets resist separation in produced water

Researchers tested five offshore-water samples using pure toluene droplets and microfluidics. Surface-active constituents strongly reduced coalescence; the method complements chemical analysis and does not establish full-scale field treatment performance.

Study links spill vulnerability to produced water-like groundwater chemistry

A peer-reviewed analysis combined more than 16,000 domestic-well samples with groundwater-flow modeling and found higher odds of produced water-like chemical signatures in areas modeled as vulnerable to unconventional oil-and-gas surface spills. The association is not proof of causation, and the authors note other possible brine sources and data limitations.

West Texas field trial finds treated produced water supported alfalfa for one season

An open-access field study found no significant differences in alfalfa growth or biomass between polished desalinated produced water and groundwater irrigation during the evaluated season; forage quality and microbial diversity were broadly comparable. Strontium in irrigation water exceeded a recommended threshold, and the authors call the result preliminary because the study covered one season, included blended irrigation, and lacked plot-level replication.

Permian modeling shows reuse cannot eliminate disposal pressure

UT Austin researcher Katie Smye estimates that Permian operations produced about 21 million barrels of water per day in 2025 and explains why recycling and treatment cannot absorb the basin-wide surplus. The episode’s volumes, recovery case and pressure estimates are research scenarios and cited datasets—not a forecast or regulatory finding—and treatment would still leave concentrate requiring disposal.
